Karona Overblow System shortlisted in Connected Britain Awards
Prysmian Group’s solution for the quick and cost-effective installation of high density optical fibre cable has been shortlisted in four categories of the Connected Britain awards 2019.
The Karona Overblow System allows new fibre optic cable to be installed into pre-existing sub-ducted routes containing legacy cable, dramatically reducing both the time and cost of installation.
It is a solution comprised of overblow cables, installation equipment, connectivity and comprehensive training enabling installers to put the system quickly into use.
Originally developed by Prysmian’s UK telecoms team in response to a customer enquiry, the Karona Overblow system has become a trusted solution for the installation of high speed fibre networks in the region.
Timesaving is undoubtedly the most attractive benefit. Once civil work begins in traditional installation, a speed of 100 metres per day is considered fast. Overblow installation proceeds at 30 metres per minute, completing installations in just a few hours.
Without the need for civils work there is also no requirement for the planning licences that typically demand 90-180 days’ notice prior to work starting.
The Karona Overblow System has been shortlisted in the Superfast, Fibre Connectivity, Barrier Removal and Final Mile Award categories in the 2019 Connected Britain Awards programme.
“We are delighted by the recognition for the Karona Overblow System” commented Susanna Santamaria, Engineering Manager for Telecom Cables at Prysmian. “It is a great example of our UK product development team responding to a customer need with a clever and practical solution.”
Better known as the world’s largest manufacturer of power and telecommunications cable, Prysmian Group also provides a comprehensive range of connectivity components allowing an end-to-end installation of high density fibre optic cable from a single source. The company’s expertise in developing bespoke solutions is resulting in a growing customer base, particularly in the FTTx market.
The Connected Britain Award winners will be announced at the Connected Britain exhibition on 18 June at London’s Business Design Centre.
